Project 1

This is the research I did on the materials, and how they were made. I also did some research into the software that I was going to use for the projects, and also ones that were avaliable for me to use.

This is the work I did in Photoshop and Unreal Engine 4. I had made the Stone Tiles in Photoshop and had made the diffuse, displacement, specular and normal maps in Photoshop too. They were made from the original picture and then altered to create the different maps. Then, I had transferred the different maps into Unreal Engine 4 and had made the sphere, which had the Stone Tile image on them. I had added the maps along with some other different pieces of information to create a sphere that looked 3D in Unreal Engine 4. I had also added a material instance to be able to add more or less tiles to the sphere, based from the picture.

This is the original image that I had created of the tiles. I had changed some of the tiles around and moved them so it, didn't look like a lot of tiles just repeating themselves. This was the base image used in Unreal Engine 4 too for the sphere.

This is the displacement, it is used for the shape of the image so, it is capable of being able to go 3D.

This is the normal map, it is the UV of the actual shape that I had made for the tiles.

This is the specular map, it is the tiles that I had made, but with a dark silhouette around them.

This is the material editor that was used to create the tiles. This has all the nodes, that had been used when editing the tiles in Unreal Engine 4. This also, has the maps in too that have all been combined to make a image.

This is the final product, this is the tiles in a sphere form with all of them maps on top of them. They have a 3D type of look to them and bend and curve around the shape.

Material 1: Circle Pattern (Light Emitting Material)

This is my first material which I did in Photoshop, this was a pattern of circles with an emissive glow. The material did take time to do as the initial diffuse of the texture had to be redone twice, as the first file had gotten corrupt. The circles were various colours and had an abstract look to them. I did want to add a light source to the actual diffuse to make it glow which I did, and it made it have a lot more depth as before it did look very plain even with the colours.

Material 2: Zebra (Photo-realistic Material)

This is my Photo-realistic material which is of a Zebra print that I had taken a photo of. The material did take time to get the actual texture to be tileable but it was fairly easy to do. This was a really good material as it had worked out fine and the normal was on it properly, and the way it was shaped around the preview mesh was fantastic too.

Material 3: Rocky Lava (Hand Painted Texture)

This is my Rock and Lava material which also, has an emissive glow to it. This material was rocks surronded by lava, and originally I was going to do a material with the lava flowing but due to the Unreal Engine messing up with the normal and specular maps I couldn't so instead, just decided to add a emissive map to it. The hardest part about this was getting the normal to stop coming out inverted as everytime it was put in, the rocks were sunken in the lava which was not what I had wanted, but due to nothing else seeming to work I had just change my other maps, to make it suit around the normal.

Hand Painted Texture Assessment
For the lesson we had today, we were given 1 hour and 20 minutes to create 4 textures, we had previously done on a power of 2 texture. I didn't really realise until after that to the power of 2 means fully covering a square canvas with the material, as I hadn't been in when we had the lesson of learning this. I had tried to get the work done to the best of my ability but, the only one that was really done was the fur texture. This is because the fur texture, is a painting I have done, many times prior to this lesson. So I just needed a recap of the basic tools to use. The other pieces I struggled to complete as I had a strain on the time I had to do, so I was trying to rush painting it as I was trying to look back at the lesson, as I had only done it once and the ice texture never before, and trying to remember how to get the texture to look good, The ice texture I also, had to start trying to shade again as it looked weird the first time round.

Comments

The hair design is spot on. Ice could be looking like ice.
 Yes
 Yes
 Yes.

- Power of 2?
- Yes. Yes.
Ice is very nicely detailed and(?) blended.
Fur needs more detail, add more highlights and undertones?

I really like how realistic your fur looks :) - Courtney

Hair/fur looks really good
Power of two ✓
4 correct textures ✓
Could have worked on a little more

Good use of colour
More detail needed in wood texture

Not to the Power of two.
Hair flow looks nice as does the ice.

• Hair looks well detailed
•Wood looks too plain

Power of 2 ✓
Textures ✓
The fur is spot on
Ice could use a few scratches or something like that
